People walk past destroyed buildings

War traces, in the lives of the individuals who are confronted with it, a clear boundary between the “before” and the “after”. This singular ordeal does not sign, as is often believed, an impossibility to live, but generally obliges to live in a very different way. The shaking of the vital process which results from this situation generates upheavals which each individual faces by mobilizing his capacities of adaptation. But not everyone reacts the same way. To describe the mechanisms at work, health psychologists have coined the concept of "coping", often translated in the specialized literature by the French term "adjustment". Closely linked to the notion of adaptation, coping refers to our way of “coping” with what happens to us. However, depending on whether our reaction is directed towards the actions to be taken to act on the situation, or whether it is centered on the management of the resulting emotional states, the consequences are not the same.

Coping, what is it? In a broad sense, this concept refers to the way in which one copes with a difficult situation through various forms of adjustment. The term “coping” appeared for the first time in 1966. It then designates a set of strategies implemented to face difficult situations or stressful events . Subsequently, this term was the subject of a more specific conceptualization , designating “the set of constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts, intended to control, reduce or tolerate specific internal or external imperatives which are perceived as threatening or exceeding the resources of an individual”. This definition marks a change in the phone number list way of approaching the reaction of individuals faced with problems: on the one hand, their response is envisaged in terms of changing processes, and on the other hand, their behavior in the face of the situation is not not purely passive but active.

Coping and stress The notion of coping is very strongly linked to the notion of adaptation. This dynamic process of change concerns all living beings. Schematically, it is the ability to react to external and/or internal stimuli, constraints and conflicts, seeking to reduce or eliminate their unfavorable consequences through various adjustments. The purpose is survival, and the creation of a new balance compatible with this survival. Stress is such an external stimulus. It is the condition that emerges when person-environment transactions lead the individual to perceive an opposition – real or imagined – between the demands of the situation and his own resources, whether biological, psychological or social. This stress condition generally involves a process of cognitive evaluation that is carried out based on two factors: the primary evaluation, which assesses whether the environmental demand threatens the person's adaptation, and the secondary evaluation, which assesses whether the available resources are sufficient to meet the demand. In such a situation, coping is seen as a moderator of the processes that affect the relationship between the stressful event and the resources available to an individual to cope with it.
